NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 18- A day after the court granted investigators 14 days to hold 6 police officers linked to the Killing of two Embu brothers, the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji has issued fresh orders.
In a letter to the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, the DPP has advised that Manyatta Sub-County Police Commander and the Officer Commanding Station be suspended.
“Additionally, I direct that further investigations be carried out into the role of the OCPD and OCS. Pending the same, I recommend that they be suspended from duty,” said the DPP in a letter to the IG.
The directive is separate from an earlier one in which he ordered the arrest and arraignment of the six officers.
The death of Benson Njiru and Emmanuel Mutura has exposed the National Police Service and strained further the police-civilian working relationship.
The two were arrested on August 1 only for their bodies to be found dumped at a morgue in Embu.
Witnesses told investigators that the two were not booked in the police station. They had been arrested for allegedly flouting curfew rules.
Human Rights Defenders have called for justice of the two, several others who have lost their lives at the hands of police.
More than 30 people have been killed by police between March 2020 to date, during operations to enforce COVID-19 protocols.
Police have been accused of using excessive force while others have resulted to extorting from Kenyans.
For instance, four police officers were arrested on Tuesday evening for stealing from a businessman in Ruiru.
They are yet to face robbery with violence charges.
