NAKURU, Kenya, Aug 23- A police officer in Nakuru stormed into a hospital where his girlfriend, whom he had assaulted, was receiving treatment and shot her several times.

The woman died on spot according to an incident report seen by Shahidi News.

His girlfriend arrived at the Njoro Sub-County hospital a few minutes after midnight with a fractured leg.

The doctors at the facility told Shahidi News that she said “her boyfriend had assaulted her.”

But as she was being attended to, the officer entered the treatment ward and shot her several times on the right arm, right wrist and on the right side of her back.

“We are still in shock,” a medical officer at the facility told Shahidi News.

Area adminstrator Timothy Njoroge described the incident as unfortunate.

“It is not yet clear what differences led to this unfortunate incident. We have lost two young lives,” he said.

The woman, who police identified but cannot be mentioned to allow the family to be notified, was aged 29 years.

The killer officer was aged 28 years and was based at Njoro Police station.

After killing his girlfriend, his colleagues say an infuriated officer went back to the station and was shooting “aimlessly at everything.”

During the attempts to disarm him, he turned the gun on himself. He shot himself on the chin and died instantly.

“The bullet exited on the upper forehead. He died instantly,” his colleagues at Njoro police station said.

The two bodies were taken to Egerton University Morgue awaiting postmortem examination.

The deceased officer’s  AK 47 rifle S/NO. 4912292 was recovered from the scene with 11 rounds of ammunition.

When he took the rifle, it had 30 rounds of ammunition.

The National Police Service Commission is in the process of establishing a mental health unit, following an increase in cases of police officers killing themselves, and in most cases after harming their relatives, loved ones or colleagues.

In April, a bodyguard attached to Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiangi shot his wife, a traffic police officer, dead before turning the gun on himself.

Such cases have been attributed to work related trauma and poor working conditions.
