SIAYA,Kenya, Aug 23 – A series of burglaries Sunday night at Siranga trading centre in Ugenya that saw four night guards murdered has sent shock waves across Siaya County.
The area has made headlines in recent weeks following similar incidents not only in Siranga but also in neibouring towns across the lake basin county.
According to preliminary reports, the four guards were attacked by unknown assailants outside the stores they were guarding before their bodies were dumped in a thicket behind the stores.
Surprisingly however according to residents, the incident occurred just 50 meters from Siranga police post.
At least two shops were broken into.
“We want the Sub county police commander and other senior police officials in Ugenya sub county transferred. They have refused to put in effort to stop the frequent insecurity incidents yet arrest innocent women and youths everyday,” said Michael Onyango a Bodaboda rider in the area.
Just last month two security guards lost their lives after were hacked to death in Alego Usonga.
Cases of insecurity have been on the ascendancy in the area according to locals with efforts to have security beefed up proving futile. Similar incidents have been reported in Yenga and Bar-Awendo trading centers.
“The police officers working at the main station have complains about the police post and it is now clear, this police post is the problem, ” said a resident.
Area county commander Michael Muchiri condemned the incident saying investigations have since been launched to track down the assailants.
“My officers are currently at the scene trying to get details of what happened.I can confirm that four security guards were murdered on Sunday night,” said Muchiri.
The deceased suffered deep cut wounds on their legs, hands and head according to the preliminary reports.
Protests ensued Monday morning after residents temporarily barred police from recovering the deceased’s bodies.
The bodies were however taken to the local morgue.
