NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 31- The Committee on Administration and National Security of the National Assembly has summoned the country’s security chiefs led by Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i to appear before it on Tuesday morning, to shed light on the ‘replacement’ of Deputy President William Ruto’s security detail.
The committee has also asked Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Karanja Kibicho and Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to accompany Matiang’i to the meeting.
Committee chairman Peter Mwathi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Limuru said Matiang’i and the IG are expected to appraise members on what led to the changes in Ruto’s security system.
They will also be required to explain to members why they made the changes which have since taken a political angle with the DP allies terming it part of the succession wars in government.
The committee will also seek to establish the measures the National Police Service has put in place to ensure that the security of the Deputy President is not compromised.
This is after more than 30 highly trained elite officers from the General Service Unit were replaced with Administration police officers to man his residence, both private and official.
Ruto has protested officially against the move to replace his security team.
But on Tuesday, in a Tweet, the Deputy President who has since met the new team said he was satisfied with their services.
In a letter to Mutyambai, Ruto through his Chief of Staff said that the move to change his security team and five drivers had an ulterior motive.
Over the weekend, the Deputy President seemed to have changed his tune and instead said he was okay with the changes- saying he was okay even being offered security services from G4S, a private security firm.
