MANDERA,Kenya, Sep, 4 – Police in Mandera on Thursday killed a man suspected of dealing in illegal firearms.

While acting on a tip off from members of the public, security officer from Kotulo Police Station laid an ambush at Kutayo area before two men riding on a motorcycle appeared.

As they tried to stop them, an exchange of fire ensued leaving one of the riders dead as his accomplice escaped on foot.

“Police officers had received information on the movement of firearms and they laid an ambush. They came in contact with two people riding on a motorcycle and a fire exchange ensued,” said Rono Bunei, North Eastern Regional Police Commander.

A pillion passenger was shot dead by the police while the other one took off.

“The officers recovered five rifles and assorted ammunition from the abandoned motorcycle,” Mr Bunei said.

“We suspect these rifles and ammunition were being delivered to either bandits or clan militias but we are working on confirming the same,” he said.

Thursday’s incident is the second in a month within the same area involving the police and armed men riding a motorcycle.

On August 6, police killed a suspected militant before recovering 432 rounds of ammunition from him.

The team recovered two AK-47 rifles, two Mark 4 rifles and three AK-47 magazines from the suspect.

The team also recovered a motorcycle, personal effects and foodstuff

Mr Bunei said the Kutayo area is being used as a transit route for illegal firearms.

“The is the common route for transportation of illegal firearms and ammunition acquired from Somalia and we are keen on dealing with smugglers,” he said.

Mr Bunei thanked locals for sharing information on the transportation of firearms in the area.

“We continue to urge for public support in our efforts to contain this menace,” he said.

He said the police are working with members of the public to identify the dead and trace his accomplices.
