LAIKIPIA,Kenya,Sep, 5 – A 10 year old boy is nursing a leg injury after a police lorry veered of the road ramming into three houses in Ndururuma, Maina location in Laikipia county Saturday evening.
According to residents, the incident which occurred at around 8pm saw the police lorry, designated as a vehicle from the police driving school drive past several road bumps before crashing into three households.
The lorry was traveling from Rumuruti to Nyahururu town.
Residents further accused the officers who were transporting charcoal and other household items of being inebriated after attempts to inquire what had led to the accident saw them initially allegedly threatened.
Though several members of the households had managed to flee to safety, a 10 year old boy was caught in the debris after the house caved in.
“We heard screams and quickly rushed there to see what happened, we found a lorry had rammed into the houses, police initially started shouting and even beat us despite attempts to save people, “ said Joseph Muthee, area resident.
It took the intervention of residents to cordon off the area as they dug through the debris successfully rescuing the 10 year old boy who had broken his leg.
He was quickly rushed to the Nyahururu County Referral Hospital.
“The lorry belongs to the government and it was ferrying charcoal, the officers were drunk and even wanted to shoot at us,” said one of the residents.
Purity Mumbi, Assistant Chief Ndururuma, in Maina location thanked residents for their efforts to rescue the injured boy at the sam time calling on motorists to observe traffic rules.
“An accident involving a police lorry lost control and rammed into a house while people were inside. We are thankful no one died but a child was injured and rushed to hospital. I however want to thank residents for rescuing the life of that child,” said Mumbi.
According to residents, the road has become prone to accidents in recent years. They are now calling on the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to erect guard rails along the road.
Police after the incident arrived at the scene cordoning off the area as a crime scene.
The lorry was towed Sunday morning and impounded at the Nyahururu police station.
Investigations into the incident is ongoing.
