KISUMU,Kenya, Sep 10 – A day old infant was rescued Friday morning after being allegedly dumped into a pit latrine by her mother in Nyalunya Sub-location in Kisumu East.

According to residents, the incident occurred at around 6am when neighbours heard voices of a crying infant inside the toilet.

Preliminary reports indicate that the landlord swiftly notified local police as residents embarked on a rescue mission removing the baby from the pit latrine. He appeared to be seemingly unharmed.

“The umbilical cord of the infant was still intact, however authorities that arrived at the scene administered first aid before taking the infant to the to hospital,” said a resident.

Police have since launched a manhunt for the suspected mother who is said to have fled her home shortly after the incident.

Area sub county police commander James Musyimi, condemned the incident saying that efforts are ongoing to ensure the mother is apprehended as the baby continues to receive treatment.

“The infant was taken to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital where she is admitted in a fair condition,” said Musyimi.

“Every human being is important and is an asset for both the family and the State. If someone is unable to take care of a child, they should inform local authorities. Our priority is to ensure that life is protected,” he further said.
