VIHIGA, Kenya, Oct, 5 – A prisoner was shot dead on Monday after he attempted to escape while being escorted to a local court in Vihiga County.

A police report from Serem Police Station showed the deceased was among eleven suspects being taken to Hamisi law courts by prison warders.

“It was reported to this station through Hamisi police post OB xx/04/10/2021 at 0940 hrs within Hamisi law courts that Serem Police Station had delivered eleven prisoners under escort of six officers in a canter. Among them were two namely: Edwin Ndege aged 26 and Benjamin Kidiahi who were handcuffed together,” reads the report.

Ndege was arrested after he assaulted a police officer during arrest. He was subsequently also set to take plea on incitement to violence charges.

Police reported that Ndege while being prepared to be taken into the court holding cell, slipped his hand through the handcuff and freed himself from his pair.

An alarm was raised quickly alerting police who attempted to pursue him.

Joseph Otido, a police constable, fired a warning shot but Ndege continued running into the porous Hamisi forest.

The officer fired two more shots as a result fatally injuring the inmate as he entered the forest.

The policeman used his AK47 rifle at a range of 400 metres from the court to shoot the prisoner.

A total of four rounds were expended by the officer.

The matter is under investigation by Vihiga County DCI while the body of the deceased was moved to Vihiga County Referral Hospital, Mbale.
