MIGORI, keys, Oct, 7 – Search and Rescue teams in Migori county Thursday morning recovered the body of a gold miner after the site he was working in collapsed on Wednesday morning.
According to preliminary reports, a total of 24 workers according to the Osiri-Matanda gold mine duty roster were actively on the site during the incident.
Area chief David Oula said that they received reports of an accident at round noon Wednesday as area residents attempted to save those trapped under the debris before authorities arrived at the scene.
“24 people were working there, four of them were managing the site when the accident occurred. We managed to rescue 23 but one was still trapped as of yesterday,” he said.
Efforts to recover the body Wednesday provided futile, however rescue teams managed to recover it Thursday.
The body of the deceased identified as Elisha Sonye is being preserved at the Migori Level 4 Hospital
The gold mine has since been cordoned off amidst safety concerns.
