LAIKIPIA,Kenya, Oct, 7 – Simon Mwangi and William Lodopwa officers with the National Police Reservists were Tuesday evening attacked by suspected bandits at Sossian area in Laikipia North.

Also injured during the attack was a ranger identified as John Ekamiti.

According to preliminary reports, the three were injured while conducting their routine patrols in the area before being shot by the marauding criminal group that continues to cause security agencies sleepless nights.

“We were riding on a motorcycle when a gang of armed men ambushed them and started shooting at them. The attackers were on foot and were hiding on both sides of the road at Tinga Mara area,” said an NPR officer in the area.

The officers have since been admitted at the Unison hospital in Rumuruti town with serious gunshot wounds.

According to available statistics, at least nine NPR are said to have been shot in the last week or so.

Despite a multiagency security operation being conducted in the area, bandits are still causing residents in some of the areas designated as dangerous and a security operation zone sleepless nights.

Simon Eturen, who is in charge of the NPR in Laikipia West said the bandits are changing tact in the way they conduct their attacks amidst calls for additional NPR deployment and a large scale disarmament exercise in the troubled area.

Area leaders continue to advocate for the proper equipping of NPR at the same time calling on the government to remunerate them amidst concerns.

Police on Wednesday meanwhile said that two suspects were arrested and two live ammunitions of 7.62mm recovered in Tinga Mara area.

The two suspects were escorted to Rumuruti Police Station waiting to be arraigned in court.

On Friday last week, two police reservists were attacked and fatally shot by armed bandits at the troubled Ol Moran area in Laikipia County.

The reservists who were among officers deployed to guard learning institutions in the area when they were ambushed by suspected armed bandits.
