KAJIADO,Kenya, Oct, 7 – Two plumbers Wednesday afternoon tragically lost their lives after drowning in a septic tank while undertaking repair works at an apartment complex in the area.

According  preliminary reports, the two deceased had been contracted to fix a leakage that had been reported in one of the tanks by the apartment’s management.

According to eye witnesses, the deceased had initially commenced their work by inspecting the drainage system and then proceeded to open three septic tanks in the area.

“It is while they were on their routine repairs that one of the men who was inside the septic tank was heard screaming prompting the other to rush there in order to establish what was happening,” said a witness.

His attempts to save his colleague proved futile as he too fell inside and drowned.

Screaming neighbours who were quickly alerted to the incident rushed to the scene and notified area police.

Isinya sub county police commander Charles Chepkonga who confirmed the incident said it took the intervention of the Kajiado emergency department and Kenya Red Cross officers to retrieve the bodies after an hour long operation.

“ I am calling on landlords to be cautious while handling sewerage systems to avert such deaths,” Said Chepkonga.

Authorities who expressed their sadness over the death of the two plumbers urged apartment owners to work with county officials when conducting repairs on septic tanks amidst safety concerns,

Similar incidents have been reported in the area in recent years.

The bodies of the deceased have since been moved to Kitengela sub county hospital mortuary awaiting identification and postmortem.
