NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 7- Officers on general duty in Nairobi have been ordered to stop using private vehicles during operations.
There has been cue and cry that some cops have formed a habit of travelling in Toyota Probox cars to make arbitrary arrests, harass, and extort from suspects and innocent civilians.
In worst-case scenarios, some of those arrested and bundled into private cars and mostly a Toyota Probox end up missing or dead.
Nairobi regional commander Augustine Nthumbi has also ordered officers under his command to be in uniform all the time whenever on duty.
Henceforth, officers attached to Quick Response Unit (QRU) will not make arrests or visit bars and restaurants even when in their jungle uniforms.
“Use of officers in civilian attire inside Probox vehicles has now been prohibited and if such cases are reported; that will amount to illegal operations and extortion from the public, which is criminal,” said the commander.
Officers enforcing compliance in entertainment joints will have to be supervised by a senior cop.
“From now henceforth officers in Persian blue police uniform under the command of an Inspector and above will be the only one to effect bar closures, license checks, and subsequent arrests if any,” directed Nthumbi.
The directive also barred officers not based in their area of operations from conducting any police duties outside their jurisdiction.
“Departmental action will be taken against any person contravening this directive forthwith,” warned the police boss
