NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 12- The demolition of houses on a road reserve that is under expansion in Mukuru slums continues Tuesday.

This enters the second day which has left several people homeless after government officials flattened houses on a road reserve within Mukuru Slums, Nairobi.

Officials say the expansion of Catherine Ndereba Road from Airport Road is part of a planned exercise to ensure the network in the informal settlement is good. This has displaced many.

Government bulldozers landed in the area in a demolition exercise which was being supervised by police and roads officials. The officials said those whose houses were demolished had been warned and compensated.

The road is part of the Nairobi expressway and is aimed at easing traffic flow on roads surrounding the highway. Those affected have been urged to move elsewhere.

Lack of roads in informal settlements has affected many services in general.

The road runs through the slum and is key in opening up the area. There are tens of residents who had built and stayed on the affected stretch. They were however talked, compensated, and told to move.

It will snake through the slum up to Enterprise Road which stretches almost ten kilometers.

The expressway has expanded many other feeder roads in a program that was signed to manage traffic flow.
