NAIROBI,Kenya, Oct, 14 – Kenyans have for the last 30 days endured untold hardship after the cost of fuel in the country drastically rose affecting the cost of living nationwide.
Following weeks of public outcry and calls for proper legislation to shield mwananchi, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has now revised the price of the crucial commodity.
In statement Thursday, EPRA announced that the maximum petroleum pump price in Nairobi for super petrol and diesel would decreased by Sh5 per litre while that of kerosene would decrease bySh7 per litre.
“The prices are inclusive of the 8 per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) in line with the Finance Act 2018, the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2020 and the revised rates for excise duty adjusted for inflation as per Legal Notice No. 194 of 2020,” read a statement from energy regulator.
This is expected to ease the cost of living for millions of Kenyans amidst a tough economic period as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
“Super Petrol and Diesel decrease by Sh5 per litre while that of Kerosene decreases by Sh7.28 per litre and will now retail at Sh129.72, Sh110.60 and Sh103.54 per litre respectively in Nairobi starting Thursday at midnight,”Said EPRA.
Prior to the unprecedented fuel prices in the last 30 days, the prices had remained unchanged for a period of two months as the government retained subsidies on petroleum products this even as crude oil prices sky rocketed resulting in the increase of cost of importing petroleum products.
