NAIROBI,Kenya, Oct, 16 – The Kenya Bureau of Standards Friday joined the world in commemorating World Standards Day, themed ‘Standards for sustainable development goals- a shared vision for a better future’.
The event held which was held in Nairobi was graced by, Principal Secretary, State Department for Industrialization Kirimi Kaberia, International Standards Organization, President Eddy Njoroge, Managing Director KEBS, Bernard Njiraini, KEBS Chairman, Eng Bernard Ngore, among other dignitaries.
The event highlighted on Standardization, Metrology and Conformity Assessment, provision of testing and calibration facilities, control of the use of standardization marks, undertaking educational work in standardization and Inclusion of the public in implementing standards.
Speaking on the Bureau’s way forward, KEBS Managing Director Bernard Njiraini Said, “Through KEBS, we are able to facilitate trade in the region, by harmonizing standards with East African partner states so that we can increase the volume of trade across borders. Without keenness in standardization it is not possible to improve trade in and out.”
According to the KEBS Managing Director, the agency is looking to provide standardization for e-commerce where individuals can order a product by just entering correct specifications. With harmonization of standards, the product can be delivered without incurring cost of logistics.”
KEBS aims to apply standards as tools to provide food security, facilitate communication, measurement, commerce, and manufacturing. Among other Sustainable Development Goals, KEBS is also looking to build resilient and smart cities.
The Principal Secretary, State Department for Industrialization Kirimi Kaberia urged on trade stakeholders to consider the environment while conceiving and rolling out projects in national, regional and international fronts.
“Sustainable Development requires that as we engage in various activities, we do not lose out on the needs to observe the interdependence between development and environment. Without taking care of environment, nothing will do as development and it may not only be unsustainable but also counterproductive.” Said PS, Kirimi Kaberia.
World Standard Day was created on October 14, 1946 by experts and delegates from around 25 countries in London. The day is celebrated in honor of collaborative efforts of thousands of experts worldwide that develop the voluntary technical agreements that are published as International Standards.
In line with this important day in the trade industry, The Kenya Bureau of Standards has received new equipment from Trade Mark East Africa.
The Insulation Tester; to be stationed at the Electrical Engineering lab to test for the safety of medical electrical appliances.
The thickness Gauge tester; for checking product dimensions for hospital and facilities equipment
Metrology Equipment; to provide up to standard equipment providing precise measurements of objects for design, testing, assessment, profiling, and reverse engineering of parts.
The partnership between KEBS and TMEA has seen the delivery and installation of 35 pieces of laboratory equipment to the regional satellite laboratories in Moyale, Garissa and Meru.
Metrology & Testing equipment under Safe Trade Covid Intervention for Pressure and Temperature Metrology laboratories; Electrical Engineering and Non Destructive Testing (NDT) laboratories have been supplied, installed, commissioned and the KEBS Staff trained on their use.
