NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 21 – During the Mashujaa Day celebrations that were held at the Wang’uru International stadium in Kirinyaga county, President Uhuru Kenyatta sought to cement his achievements in roughly nine years while in office, insisting that his government had delivered on its key promises as stipulated under the ambitious Big 4 agenda.
Kenyatta while honouring the country’s freedom fighters said that a major road infrastructure project dubbed Mau Mau Road, which is currently under construction was in tribute to their efforts to help the country secure independence.
“To celebrate the Mau Mau liberators, a 582-kilometre road, called Mau Mau Road, is under construction in their honour. This will be the single longest road constructed in Kenya since independence.,” President Kenyatta said.
The road runs through Meru County from Kieni to Maraa, then Embu County from Kairuri to Irangi through Tharaka Nithi County from Kibugua to Itugururu.
And in Central Kenya, it runs from Mutithi to Kiangwachi and from Kimbibi to Mugumo Road. This is longer than the Nairobi-Mombasa highway by 140 kilometres.
“It follows the warpath taken by Mau Mau liberators as they fought the colonizers. Once completed, it will be possible for dwellers of Kirinyaga to travel to Kisumu or Uganda without passing through Nairobi,” he said.
The President also hailed the Nairobi Expressway, saying that it would have been the envy of even the country’s freedom fighters.
It is the largest expressway in Africa stretching a total of 27 kilometers. It runs from Mlolongo in Machakos County to Rironi in Kiambu County where another dual carriageway is expected to be launched soon – stretching all the way to Mau Summit in the Rift Valley.
Kenyatta also hailed the construction of 7,991km of new tarmac roads, with an additional 4,800 km said to be under construction.
