NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 29- A couple arrested on September 24 was spying on Kenya, detectives who spoke to Shahidi News have said.

They were arrested at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, sparking widespread concern over safety and whereabouts.

They were however released and allowed to travel to Iran, after a week of grilling.

While it was initially believed that they were arrested over terror-related issues, detectives privy to the details of their arrest, say they were allegedly spying on the country, seeking to get highly placed and sensitive information.

According to the police, the two were keen on getting crucial political and military information.

It is not however clear why they were released if at all they had committed the alleged crimes.

The Iranian, police say was ‘deeply’ involved in espionage, “and was on a mission to establish a network to investigate some of the country’s crucial sectors.”

According to detectives, the man was at some point captured on CCTV cameras interviewing “a person of interest” at a city hotel.

He was recording the conversation using his phone.

“Those recruited were well equipped and skilled with special training,” the detective who spoke to Shahidi News on condition of anonymity said.

The Kenyan woman hails from Gatanga in Murang’a County.

According to sources, the Iranian was working on the instructions of the Iran Government.

He is said to have started dating the Kenyan woman in a bid to conceal his motive. The two met in Kisumu.

“He is a frequent visitor of the country,” an immigration officer said.

Police officers identified the two as Stella Waithera and Saied Golabi.
