KITUI,Kenya, Nov, 12 – A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier is in police custody after he was arrested while attempting to allegedly snatch a firearm from a police officer in Kitui town.
The soldier, identified as Carlos Kithongo Munyoke is reported to have ambushed John Karanja, a police officer who was guarding a local Huduma Center.
A report by the police at Kitui Police Station indicated that the soldier was noticed hiding along a perimeter wall by the police officer using a flash light.
The soldier is reported to have run into the compound and grabbed the police officer’s Scorpion SMG rifle.
“A struggle ensued between the two but when the police officer managed to cock the rifle, the soldier identified himself and begged the policeman to spare his life,” read the report.
Another police officer joined in and together with Karanja restrained the soldier and took him to the station where the suspect was searched and a military Identity Card number 131555 was found in his possesion.
The matter is pending under investigation.
Meanwhile, the police headquarters is collecting data of all officers with visual communicating skills to enhance service delivery in all police stations.
In a communication to all police formations except the DCI, Vigilance House said it is the process of taking stock of its strength in view of determining the gap and inform the training projections.
According to Mr Jaspher Nyauma, AIG, several police have been trained either by government or other partners but the numbers remain low therefore the need for training of more officers in sign language.
“We need to develop capacity to assist members of society with hearing difficulties,” he said.
