NAIROBI,Keny, Nov, 16 – Security has been heightened in the country’s capital Nairobi ahead of the swearing of Anne Kananu Mwenda as the Governor of Nairobi City County Tuesday at the Kenyatta International Conventional Centre (KICC).

Police say they don’t want any form of disruption of the event that comes years after the former governor Mike Sonko was removed from office.

Her swearing-in comes after the court dismissed an appeal by former governor Sonko seeking to stop Kananu from being sworn in as the county’s top boss.

Supreme Court judges noted that with the absence of a judgment of the court of appeal the application by Sonko is premature and does not meet the threshold of the Constitution.

“The court lacks jurisdiction to entertain the appeal given that his main appeal at the Court of Appeal challenging his impeachment has not been heard,” ruled the judges.

Sonko wanted the Supreme Court to prohibit the swearing-in of Kananu as Nairobi Governor pending hearing and determination of his appeal.

While still in Office, Sonko had forwarded Kananu’s name to the County Assembly for vetting.

Before the vetting process kicked off, a Nairobi resident challenged the nomination which led to a court order stopping the assembly from vetting and approving her nomination.

Following sonko’s ouster, the court lifted the orders barring the vetting process and Kananu was sworn in as deputy governor.
