NAYANDARUA,Kenya, Nov, 17 – The National Irrigation Authority. is set to fund a Sh1.2 billion water Project in Nyandarua County that will ensure easy access of water to nearly 4,000 families.

According to water and sanitation cabinet secretary Sicily  Kariuki, the move is aimed at helping farmers in the county engage in agri-business through irrigation as well as providing clean water to help curb water borne diseases.

The funding seeks to revitalise at least 40 projects including the distilling of colonial dams, borehole drilling, irrigation projects and digging of water pans all spread across the county.

The county has long been plagued with a water shortage crisis that has affected almost all aspects of life.

“The projects target to improve community livelihoods and realize optimal benefits for the people in wealth creation….we want to woo more farmers to engage in irrigation as they don’t have to depend on rain-fed farming,” sad Kariuki.

Farmers engaging in irrigation will be able to net at least Sh120,000 per acre in a farming season – Farmer are expected to receiving training on various irrigation techniques one the project is complete.

The cabinet secretary spoke after touring several water projects in Ol Kalou constituency where she launched the Sh29.7 Githunguri Cascading Earth Dam in Rurii ward which targets 66 households and with a potential to irrigate 66 acres of land.

The Kianduba Borehole was also commissioned. It is being implemented at a cost of Sh10.6 million.

The Theuri borehole irrigation water project in Kaimbaga ward was also launched and will cost the state Sh12.3 million, targeting at least 300 households.

“Contractors are to finish the works on the Kagaa Irrigation borehole by December this year ”

Local administrates will meanwhile coordinate efforts to ensure works on various projects continue in earnest and remain up to standards.
