NAIROBI,Kenya, Nov, 17 – News that the Ministry of Education will facilitate the gradual resumption of internal co-curricular activities and guided inter- school contests has come as a reprieve to thousands of learners nationwide.
The ministry had prohibited all co-curricular activities such as sports, drama, music and prize giving days, involving more than one school following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In February, the Ministries of Health, Education and Sports developed the COVID-19 safety and health protocols to enable gradual and safe resumption of co-curricular activities in schools.
The activities were suspended last year.
Schools will now host internal co-curricular activities and contests over weekends and after class hours.
“On October 18, the Ministry of Health recommended that inter-school sporting activities may gradually resume with strict adherence to health rules. The initial focus should be on non-contact or low contact activities as guided in the protocols,” said Basic Education PS Dr. Julius Jwan in a statement.
Plans are already underway to ensure normalcy returns in schools according Dr Jwan as the education ministry is working closely with the ministry of health.
A section of stakeholders said that the restriction in schools was partly to blame for some of the unrest reported so far.
After schools reopened, there was pressure for learners to cover lost ground after schools were closed at the height of the pandemic.
This week learners are expected to proceed on mid term break- The break had initially been scrapped off by the ministry of education.
