NAIROBI,Kenya,Nov, 21 – National police Service Spokesperson Bruno Shioso has revealed that the government will honour its pledge of awarding a cash prize to Kenyans who aided a multi agency security team in the apprehension of convicted terror convicts that escaped from the Kamiti Maximum Prison.
In a statement, Shioso said that the government will now commence a verification process in order to ensure that the reward goes to, “deserving recipients”.
“The government acknowledges that the rearrest of the suspects was made possible with the support from emcees of the public .Indeed the accounts of several people who separately claim to have played a role in the capture have been reported extensively ion the media,”
The government had initially through the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) placed a Sh60 million bounty on their recapture of the convicts upon provision of crucial information from members of the public. A Sh20 million was placed on each fugitive.
Shioso said that due to the security nature of the incident and the risk of harm to the who genuinely aided the capture of the convicts may militate against a full public disclosure of the eventual beneficiaries of the cash reward.
Meanwhile further investigations are ongoing with detectives keen to establish how exactly the convicts escaped from Kamiti.
The three terrorists who escaped from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison are back in jail.
Kamiti Escape
They escaped on Monday, November 15, leaving heads rolling and leading to the dismissal of former Commissioner-General Wycliffe Ogallo and the arrested of two senior prison officers.
Musharraf Abdalla Akhulunga a.k.a Zarkarawi, Mohammed Ali Abikar, and Joseph Juma Odhiambo a.k.a Yusuf were headed for Somalia when they were recaptured on Thursday in a village in Kitui. They are expected to get extra charges of escaping from lawful custody.
They were airlifted back to Kamiti where a team of security officials led by Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiangi and his ICT counterpart Joe Mucheru waited to receive them.
Police said they were fleeing towards Boni Forest which borders Somalia when they were cornered by security agents, hours after residents reported seeing them in Malalani market in Endau location, some 100 kilometres East of Kitui town.
They were briefly held at Mwingi Police Station awaiting an airlift to Nairobi.
The terror convicts were whisked away from the station to the anti-terror police training college in Kanyonyoo, Kitui, by road under heavy security and later flown to Nairobi aboard the police chopper.
Witnesses said the convicts were hiding during the day and trekked under the cover of darkness to avoid being caught.
Residents said they got suspicious when the trio asked for directions connecting to Garissa and Boni Forest in Lamu.
One of the escapees had swollen legs and was limping, a local said.
The escape led to the arrest of 13 wardens and major changes in the Kenya Prisons.
It is not clear if someone got the bounty. Matiang’i refused to discuss the issue.
“No comment on that. We are happy they are back here,” he said.
It is not yet clear how they managed to escape from Kamiti, which is one of the most guarded prison facility, in Kenya.
Drastic changes are expected within the leadership of one of the country’s critical agencies, within the criminal justice system. The changes will be overseen by the new prison boss Brigadier (Rtd) John Kibaso Warioba.
