NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 22- A woman in viral videos shared by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on his social platforms has claimed she spoke under duress, in a statement at the Karen Police station.
While refuting the scandalous details she is sharing with the governor, the woman said she did all this at a gunpoint.
Merry Nkatha is now seeking protection from the police, claiming her life is in danger in the ongoing feud between the former governor, top judges, and lawyers, including state officials. The former banker says she fears for her life.
Nkatha who spoke to journalists after recording the statement on Monday at a hotel in Karen alleged that the former governor or his supporters may harm her for refusing to cooperate with him.
“My life is in danger,” she said.
She claimed Sonko has been seeking to have her as his witness in two cases against the newly sworn-in Nairobi Governor Anne Kananu and Justice Saidi Chitembwe among others.
“They have been calling and threatening me since and I can’t have peace. I feel in danger and that is why I have reported the matter to the police,” she said.
According to Nkatha, she was blocked and kidnapped on November 20, 2021, in Karen by people she knows.
They then, she said, made a call to Sonko, who is said to have responded to ready-made questions.
Sonko then recorded her and has proceeded to share online.
During the ordeal, Nkatha said she was given “some chocolate to eat” which was meant to make her relax.
Sonko released the audio through his social media accounts in which Nkatha is heard responding to questions and implicating Kananu and other individuals.
“He wanted me to be his witness and when I refused. It is at that point that he started to blackmail me saying he wanted money from Kananu. I had by then reported the matter to the police,” she said.
She alleged that Sonko threatened to release the audio to the public if he didn’t get what he wanted.
He apparently wanted Sh20 million from Kananu for him to stop releasing the audio.
Sonko declined to comment on the allegations on Monday.
According to the former banker, she has known Sonko for almost two years. “Sonko is as a jinxed man who is out to revenge,” she said.
Langata police boss Benjamin Mwanthi told Shahidi News that already investigations have kicked off following the claims.
“A matter was reported and officers are investigating the claims on the same,” he said.
Sonko is releasing a series of audio and videos in which he is implicating judges of the high court for allegedly engaging in corruption.
The former Governor has since lodged a complaint at the Judicial Service Commission on the judges.
Sonko is unhappy with his ‘friends’, whom he says betrayed him and as a result, he lost his seat.
