KAKAMEGA,Kenya, Nov, 24 – A family in Ikolomani, Kakamega county is mourning the death of their loved one after being trampled to death by a bull during a bullfighting event at Nyayo Tea Zone this past weekend.

The deceased identified as Robert Atema is said to have left home on the fateful day heading to the venue as a spectator.

The 39 year old is said to have lost his life after one of the bulls ran in to the crowd forcing spectators to run helter-skelter.

While running, he is said to have tripped as the bull repeatedly stomped on his chest.

“I received a call and told he was in an accident, when I asked what type of accident I was told that he was trampled by a bull,” said one of the deceased’s relative.

Area sub county police commander David Kabena confirmed the incident saying that the deceased was shortly after rushed to the Mukumu hospital where he died while receiving treatment.

“Though bull fighting is part of our culture, when people attend this function, people become trampled because these events are very over-crowded such that even bulls when attempting to escape they end up where people are…we need to change this.” said another relative.

The deceased now leaves behind three children.

His family is seeking help from well wishers in catering for the needs of his children saying the deceased was the only bread-winner in the family.
