KERICHO,Kenya, Nov, 26 – Two people were arrested Thursday for impersonating Police officers in Kericho under the guise of conducting routine patrols.
According to preliminary reports, the two suspects went round the town randomly stopping bodaboda operators and accused them of either flouting traffic rules or not wearing a face mask.
Nickson Ng’etich, a bodaboda operator in town said that the two fake cops stopped him as he was purchasing shoes at a nearby shop -Despite parking his motorcycle as stipulated by law, he was harassed and accused of not wearing a face mask.
“They said my motorcycle did not have the proper number plate and that I was not wearing a mask. This was obviously a lie and that is why I decided to contact the police for assistance after I noticed they might be fraudsters…” said Ng’etich.
The chairperson of the area bodaboda operators Edwin Koros said that the trend is now becoming a source of great concern.
“On a daily basis our operators lose between Sh500 and Sh1,000, this is hurting their businesses and means of livelihood,” said Koros.
Area sub county police commander Caleb Wesa confirmed the incident and revealed that similar incidents have been reported in the town.
The suspects are set to be arraigned for fraud and impersonating police officers.
