NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 29- Football Kenya Federation president Nick Mwendwa is expected in court on Monday to face various charges including fraud.
Mwendwa has been in police custody since Friday afternoon. He was detained at Gigiri police cells where he was Saturday picked from for further statement recording and taken back.
Prosecutors in the case asked the file on the probe from police for perusal and action ahead of the planned arraignment.
His lawyer Eric Mutua said he was aware the prosecutors were in discussion with the police over the new developments and they plan to charge him.
Mutua said police informed him they will file a charge of alleged misappropriation of Sh8 million from the federation.
Mwendwa was arrested along Kiambu Road on November 26 as he drove to the city centre and was taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations for grilling.
This was a day after he was set free by the court.
Mwendwa was initially arrested on November 12 and spent a weekend behind bars before being released on a bail of Sh4 million as investigations continued.
Nairobi magistrate Wandia Nyamu dismissed the application after prosecutors, who had applied for seven days to enable them to conduct investigations, sought to close the file against him.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed has since established a caretaker committee that will manage the affairs of FKF for 6 months.
It will be led by Retired Judge Ringera.
Meanwhile, a special audit of the books of accounts of FKF is set to be carried out “and subsequent frequent future audits.”
FKF has since been barred from opening any further bank account unless when authorized by the Principal Secretary within the 6-month period the caretaker committee will be in place.
It further recommends that the Ministry of Sports should not release any funds, to FKF unless and until “the previous funds are accounted for.”
The caretaker committee will conduct all the affairs of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) in accordance with its constitution.
It is also tasked with ensuring FKF is in compliance with the Sports Acts (2013).
It is also expected to coordinate and ensure the smooth running of FKF’s operations including team preparations of all local and international sporting events.
