MANDERA,Kenya, Dec, 4 – Security has been heightened in Bambo area of Mandera county after two police officers were killed in a suspected Al-Shabaab attack.

According to preliminary reports, 10 other officers were also injured during the Saturday morning incident.

The militants are said to have set an ambush for the police officers who were travelling aboard a lorry from Rhamu to Mandera town.

Police say the incident occurred at around 9am. The lorry was also ferrying food to the police in Mandera town.

Sources say that the militants initially targeted the lorry using a rocket propelled grenade (RPG) and later resulted to using their firearms after missing their target.

“Unfortunately we lost two officers and others were injured. It could have been worse,” said an officer who sought anonymity.

The militants are further said to have sprayed bullets towards the lorry forcing the driver to speed off in a bid to save lives.

The injured officers are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital as a contingent of officers have been deployed to the area in a bid to restore normalcy and apprehend the terrorists according to North Eastern Regional Police Commander Rono Bunei.

“The lorry tires were deflated after shots were fired but he still managed to drive for a couple of kilometres,” said police.

Mandera county has fallen victim to sporadic terror attacks over the years, with militants said to be targeting key government installations and even officials.
