KITUI,Kenya,Dec, 4 – At least 23 people have been confirmed dead after a bus plunged into River Enziu in Kitui county on Saturday.

According to Mwingi East Sub county police commander Joseph Yakan, the school bus that plunged into the river was ferrying members of the Mwingi Catholic Church Choir. The bus was heading to Nuu area from Mwingi town.

A video depicting the incident showed the bus being immobile on the edge of the river before later proceeding on the daring cross.

A few seconds later, the bus shockingly plunged into the river and was completely submerged by the flood waters.

Area residents could be heard screaming for help as the bus was submerged in water. It took the efforts of local divers to attempt rescue some of the passengers who were shorty after rushed to the Mwingi Level four Hospital.

Efforts however to save a good number of the passengers proved futile.

Yakan who confirmed the incident however said police are yet to establish the number of passengers who were in the bus.

According to local residents, the crossing, where the government had commissioned the construction of a bridge has been flooded for at least two days due to the heavy rainfall being witnessed across the country.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing.
