NAIROBI,Kenya,Dec, 4 – The new look Uhuru Gardens is expected to host this year’s Jamhuri Day celebrations, the final one to be presided over by president Uhuru Kenyatta.
During a briefing on the state of preparedness, Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Karanja Kibicho said construction works are at 95 per cent as 11,000 guests will be attending the festivities.
“We intend to start rehearsals next week and this will include trooping of the colors by the Kenya Defence Forces,” he said.
During the celebrations, a modern museum is expected to be unveiled by president Kenyatta.
The steering committee on national holidays is meanwhile expected to meet next week and determine whether parallel celebrations will be held across the counties.
“In adherence to the containment measures, we will allow only 10,000 people in the public sitting area, and around 1,000 in the main dias. Invitations will be done through our usual systems [Nyumba Kumi and the NGAOs structure] to ensure that there is equal participation and fair representation by all classes,” he said.
Uhuru gardens had been closed for more than a year to give way for renovations.
It also holds great historical significance as the Kenyan flag was hoisted within the premises when the country became independent.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has within a year visited the gardens as renovations took place saying that it would be turned into a modern recreational facility and memorial park.
