NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 9 – The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has refuted claims that the country’s national examinations in both Primary and Secondary schools have been postponed.
In a statement Wednesday, KNEC chief executive Dr. David Njengere said that the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate for Secondary Education (KCSE) are slated to be held between March and April as earlier stipulated.
“Knec’s attention has been drawn to information circulating in social media on the postponement of KCPE and KCSE national examinations. It is in this regard that we wish to inform all the relevant stakeholders that there are no changes on the dates,” said Njengere.
Some 1,225,698 candidates have been registered to sit their 2021 KCPE while 832,026 candidates will sit their KCPE.
The examination body also revealed that the exams are already ready.
The examination calendar was interrupted at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country that resulted in the closure of schools for several months.
Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association chairman Kahi Indimuli Tuesday said that stakeholders sought a discussion on whether the exams should be postponed as a result of the increased cases of school unrest.
“I am thinking, are these students trying to communicate something that maybe they are not ready for these exams and if they’re not ready what are they communicating?” Indumuli asked.
“It means we need to look on whether we can push the exams even for another one month or two and see if these students will be ready.”
Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha earlier this week said the exam timetable will not be interrupted.
