TANA RIVER,Kenya, Dec, 15 – The Rural electrification and renewable energy corporation (REREC) is expected to spend about Sh 6.4 billion shillings in an ambitious project that will see at least 1,200 public facilities nationwide fitted to the national electrical grid.
The programme of the Electrification of Public Facilities Project (EPFP) will be conducted in 131 constituencies across 35 counties nationwide.
Facilities such as markets, health centers, institutions of learning, administration Centers among others will now have electricity.
“To facilitate this project, the Government of Kenya secured credit financing from its Arab Development Partners for rural electrification of public facilities and households in selected rural priority areas in the country,” said Energy CS Dr. Monica Juma.
This project has been divided in terms of Nyanza and Western region,North Rift,South Rift,Central and Upper Eastern and Lower Eastern and Coast region sector.
Juma who was speaking in Charidende, in Tana River county said that the project is set for completion by June 2022.
“Completion of the project will provide electrification of 35,460 households (which translates into 7,000 households in each lot. Contractors are under strict instructions to have completed the works before June next year,” she said.
The financiers of the project include, Arab Bank for Economic Development for Africa (BADEA),OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID); Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) and the Government of Kenya.
The project is now se to improve the livelihoods of kenyans.
“This will lead to significant economic development of the country and socio-economic transformation to the communities,” said Bura MP Ali Wario.
REREC board of director’s chairperson Professor Simon Gicharu said the Corporation has aligned its activities with the national economic development blueprint, Vision 2030, and the Government’s Big 4 initiative that emphasizes on specific targets in manufacturing, food security, affordable housing and healthcare for all by the year 2022.
