SIAYA,Kenya, Dec, 17 – One person has been confirmed dead after a boulder fell on him at a goldmine in Kachola Buoro village in BondoSiaya county on Thursday.
According to preliminary reports, the deceased, 43 year old Didan Onyango Michura was in a mineshaft when the boulder fell on his head killing him instantly.
The mine is said to be 30 meters deep.
“Michura was in the process of climbing out of the mine when he met his fate,” said Edwin Ooro ,a miner.
Bondo Township chief Walter Omolo who confirmed the incident said he received a distress call from the area assist chief and on rushing to the scene he found the body had already been retrieved from the deep mine.
Several mines in the area are said to be operating illegally.
“We encourage miners to follow the law and ensure that they are are when engaging in such work,” he said.
Just a fortnight ago, 8 miners were trapped at Abimbo goldmine about 30 kilometres away in the same sub county.
Six people were rescued while one remains trapped in the 500 ft deep shaft.
