NAIROBI,Kenya, Dec, 20 – Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has revealed that the country’s security apparatus has embraced a multi-sectoral policing approach ahead of the christmas festivities.
The move which has also seen all police officers on leave recalled back to duty is expected to boost security efforts nationwide amidst security threats normally witnessed this period within urban centers and also along the country’s various border points.
As part of the efforts, Mutyambai announced that at least 3,000 prison officers will be joining their counterparts from the National Police Service (NPS) in enforcing law and order.
Prison officers will be conducting patrols on foot and mobile vehicles within various cities and towns while working with their counterparts in securing the country.
The prison officers will be gazetted as special police officers during this period.
“I appreciate the gesture by the commissioner general prisons service for augmenting our strength with an additional three thousand police officers. I assure Kenyans that NPS is up to the task across the country and even along the borders…but I would like to tell Kenyans that security starts from home…if you see anything of concern security wise please report to police,” said Mutyambai
Amidst the threat of the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus, Kenyans have been urged to be extra cautious and observe ministry of health guidelines on combating the spread of the pandemic.
At the same time Mutyambai encouraged Kenyans to celebrate the christmas holiday from where they are as opposed to travelling if possible.
“I would like to caution Kenyans from MOH pronouncements that COVID-19 is still here…if you must, move with caution but also make merry where you are in order to avoid serious health issues in January. Also move with precautions…don’t allow one family to move in one vehicle and if you can please chose to stay where you are,” he said.
Kenyans have been urged to get the COVID-19 jab in order to protect themselves and their families amidst concerns of a possible fifth wave of the pandemic in the country.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) meanwhile expressed concerns over the spike in road accidents in recent weeks.
Statistics have revealed that as of November, 30,2021, 4,121 people lot their lives as a result of road accidents compared to 3,478 compared to the same period last year. Pedestrians have been the most affected category of the vulnerable rad users with 1,413 losing their lives. compared to 1,231 last year.
Road users have now been urged to exercise caution and observe road safety rules in order to avert further deaths.
