LAMU, Kenya, Jan 4- A 62-year-old man has been killed in the latest attack in Lamu, despite heightened police vigilance.

The incident happened in Bobo-Sunkia village in Hindi division, Lamu west on Monday.

The man, whom police identified as John Gichoya, was brutally killed and his body set ablaze alongside his house.

According to locals and security sources, the man had his legs bound behind his back before he was hacked to death.

Lamu County Commissioner Irungu Macharia told Shahidi News that police were pursuing the attackers, amidst heightened tension.

The attackers, police said, then went ahead to burn down two houses in the village.

The area has seen a land dispute between ranchers and local settlers.

While the attack is believed to be conducted by extremists in the area, preliminary investigations have revealed that the attacks are linked to land issues.

The planners, according to police, wanted the alleged continued encroachment of their farms by farmers stopped.

Just a few days, 6 people were killed within the coastal county. The Monday morning incident happened in Widhu, Majembeni area.

All those who were killed were non-locals. One was shot dead while the others were burnt in their houses.

According to police, those hacked to death or targeted were all well known for aggressively agitating for land rights of the farmers and other deserving cases.

    Investigations are ongoing.
