NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 5- Businesswoman Mary Wambui is yet again in trouble, this time for allegedly being in possession of an illegal firearm.

She is set to spend the night at Muthaiga police station.

Wambui was arrested at her Runda home by detectives and taken to Muthaiga police station for questioning.

“She will be arraigned on Thursday,” police sources told Shahidi News.

She is being represented by lawyers Nelson Havi and Kipchumba Murkomen.

Police said she will be charged with possession of an unregistered firearm.

Shahidi News has established that the businesswoman is in trouble because her firearm license had expired, when she surrendered her pistol in December 2021.

This was after the Firearms Licensing Board said she was holding the pistol illegally. The license expired in April 2020.

She is also facing a Sh2.2 billion tax evasion case.

The businesswoman was charged in court over the case and released on a Sh25 million cash bail.

Her co-accused, Purity Njoki Mungai, was also released on the same terms. Part of their release at the time also saw the court direct the two to surrender their passports after the prosecution described them as possible flight risks.

Also, they were instructed not to interfere with witnesses.

The two were accused of allegedly omitting from their returns an amount that should have been included contrary to section 97 (a) as read with section 104 (3) of the tax procedures act No. 29 of 2015.

In the first count, she alongside other directors of the company said to have omitted from the company’s tax return Sh2,231,789,125, an amount which should have been included in the income tax returns submitted to the KRA commissioner for the year of income 2014.

The court was also informed that they lied to have been admitted at the Kiambu and Nairobi hospital yet they were traced at Weston hotel in rooms A301 and A302 before evading arrest last year.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) had said in a statement that Wambui, alongside Purity Njoki Mungai, who are both directors of Purma Holdings Limited, escaped from their hotel rooms a few minutes before the police and KRA officers arrived to arrest them.
