KISII, Kenya, Jan 7- Police statistics show at least 93 people committed suicide in Kisii County in 2021, raising concerns.
Of those, 81 were men and 12 women- worrying statistics that have left authorities looking for a solution.
The staggering figure is the highest recorded in the County in recent years according to police.
Kisii County Police Commander Francis Kooli told Shahidi News that he is set to plan a stakeholders meeting, to look at the root cause of the suicide cases.
He said most of those who committed suicide are from Kisii South while Kisii Central recorded the lowest numbers, with only two males.
“As the year begin, we challenge all stakeholders to come on board and try to address this issue because the 93 cases are not only numbers of lives lost. These were people who were taking care of their families.” The Kisii police boss said.
Some of the men, he said, committed suicide due to land disputes and stalled succession processes.
There have been incidents where socially weaker family members are taken advantage of by their well-to-do relatives, leading them into depression and finally suicide.
“We have noted that suicidal victims were either into family violence, rough relationships, luck of finances, loss of jobs, drug abuse among other things,” Kooli said.
