LAMU, Kenya, Jan 10 One person was on Sunday night killed in an exchange of fire between security forces and gunmen in Kibaoni area, Lamu.
The man is believed to be part of a gang of jihadists who had tried to attack locals even as the dusk to dawn curfew came in.
This increases to 13 the number of people so far killed in the area since the new year started, in several attack incidents.
Security agents have intensified operations in the area to tame terror-related activities so far with the announcement of the 30-day curfew.
Officials say the attacks are linked to politics and local terror cells.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiangi has since met local leaders, while in pursuit of a solution to a recurring problem.
Four General Service Unit officers were last week killed in an Al-Shabaab attack in the area.
The terrorists used explosives to target the police vehicle that was ferrying the officers.
Others managed to fight their way to safety.
Most of those who have been killed were human rights defenders agitating for land.
