MOGADISHU,Kenya, Jan, 12 – Nine people among them soldiers have been killed, while 14 others were injured in a car explosion on Wednesday in Mogadishu.
A suicide bomber detonated a vehicle loaded with improvised explosives on the 21 October Street, causing destruction of vehicles, rickshaws and damaging nearby buildings.
The explosion occurred a few meters away from a checkpoint that leads to a road that goes to Adan Abdulle International Airport (AAIA), where humanitarian agencies, foreign missions and the headquarters of the Africa Union Mission In Somalia (AMISOM) are stationed.
Ali Yare, the Deputy Mayor of Mogadishu who visited the scene, said security agencies have commenced investigations into the attack claimed by Al Shabaab.
“As always the enemy continues to destroy life and property of the Somali people. This iswhat they do best,” said Ali Yare.
The Deputy Mayor said his convoy was passing by when the explosion occurred.
The US Embassy in Somalia has condemned the terrorist attack.
“The United States strongly condemns today’s terrorist attack in Mogadishu. Our thoughts are with the victims and with the families of those tragically killed and injured,” the embassy said in a tweet.
