NAIROBI,Kenya, Jan, 14 – Patrick Kareithi Ndegwa, an account with the Kenya Railways corporation has been charged with altering the parastatal’s payroll system.
He is alleged to have stopped his monthly salary deductions for three years.
According to court documents, he is alleged to have committed the offence between July 2019 and November 2021.
Ndegwa has worked with the Railways corporation for 13 years.
As a result of his actions he is said to have occasioned the corporation unlawful loss of Sh 317,000.
“You’re charged that on diverse dates between July 2019 and November 2021within Nairobi county in the republic of kenya you intentionally altered the computer data in Kenya Railways Cooperation payroll system with intent to have the resultant inauthentic data to be considered as if it was authentic” read a part of the charge sheet.
Court documents further revealed that the accused was interdicted from his duty on November 18 2016 due to a gross misconduct that led to the loss of Sh 1.14 million.
He was an assistant financial accountant at the parastatal at the time.
Appearing before Senior principal magistrate Bernard Ochoi, the court was further informed that upon internal investigations, Ndegwa was ordered to report back to work on November 13 2017 but was to ordered to pay 50% of the amount which was misappropriated.
“The suspect was surcharged Sh 571,991 and the monthly deductions were to be Sh 5000 until the completion of the payment,”investigating officers revealed.
In January 2020 the accused is said to have interfered with the corporation’s payroll system to subtract the amount he had been ordered to pay from Sh 406,000 to Sh 12,500.
He used his laptop to access the corporation’s system.
He pleaded not guilty and was released on a Sh 200,000 cash bail.
