MOGADISHU,SomaliaJan, 18- Somalia government spokesperson Mohammed Ibrahim Moalimu who was seriously injured in a suicide bombing in Mogadishu on Sunday has been airlifted to Turkey for further medical treatment.
Moalimu has been receiving treatment at Digfer Hospital, renamed Erdogan Hospital, a Somali-Turkey Training and Research Hospital in Mogadishu.
He was airlifted from Aden Abdulle International Airport on Monday following a request to Turkey by the office of the Prime Minister.
The senior government official sustained minor injuries from the attack that broke one of his legs. He has injuries on one hand as well.
The suicide bomber targeted the government spokesperson’s car while leaving for work near his home at Dabka Junction, downtown Mogadishu.
The veteran journalist has been vocal in defending journalists rights and standing against abuses against members of the press across Somalia.
He resigned as the Secretary General of the Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) in December 2020, after being appointed as the Spokesperson of the Federal Government of Somalia and Senior Media Adviser to the Prime Minister.
He has been outspoken in his position as the FESOJ Secretary General.
Moalimu has also previously worked as the Mogadishu reporter for the Somali service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
Somali militants Al-Shabaab , which has links with the Al-Qaeda terror network claimed responsibility for the attack that injured the veteran journalist.
The group has besieged the UN- backed Federal Government in Somalia and also harbours territorial ambitions against Kenya.
