LAIKIPIA,Kenya, Jan, 25 – The government is fast tracking several programmes including the construction of houses for residents of Ol Moran area in Laikipia county following flareups of violence as a result of bandit attacks.

Already,19 houses are near completion with both the national and county government reiterating their commitment to ensure affected residents return to their homes as well as engage in farming.

Touring the area on Monday, Laikipia County Commissioner Joseph Kanyiri who inspected the ongoing projects said that the 19 homes should be ready for habitation within a month.

A section of the houses are being constructed using interlocking stabilized soii while others are mud-walled houses.

“We are monitoring ongoing government programmes and we hope the families will have been settled and they will engage in farming soon.We have also supervised the construction of classes for CBC and normalcy is being restored by security agencies and local communities. Through peace meetings and community dialogue forums we have emphasised on the need for the community in Ol Moran to live in peace and respect the cultural  diversity so that development is realised fast,”said, Joseph Kanyiri,County Commissioner Laikipia.

Local residents say that the government has already honoured its pledge to ensure they return home but more needs to be done in case of any eventuality.

“We have decided to rebuild our homes and return home, the government has assisted us but we need more assistance. Thank God normalcy is slowly returning to this area,”said,John Mogeni, resident Ol Moran.

As part of the programme in areas such as Kisii Ndongo where several houses were torched, the government will enhance the road network, construct schools and even install solar panels to various boreholes so that residents can easily access water.

“Residents of Kisii Ndongo area have returned home. We believe security will slowly improve and we can leave in peace. We are farmers and we depend on farming for our daily livelihood,”said Johnnes Nyakeri, resident Ol Moran.

“We are helming each other construct houses and soon we will set up permamane themes so that we can continue with ou lives. We are all neighbours and we mist help each other,”said Wilkister Nanjama, resident Ol Moran.

Since the attack several months ago in areas surrounding the Laikipia Nature Conservancy, scores of people have been killed among them security officers deployed to restore normalcy.

A security operation is still ongoing in the area.
