GARISSA,Kenya, Jan, 27 – Bernard Katana and Josphine Mbula will remain in police custody for seven days after they were accused of allegedly poisoning Garissa nominated Member of County Assembly Queen Teresia.
The prosecution had filed an application seeking to detain the accused over the January,11,2022 incident in order to allow police to complete their investigations.
The two suspects are alleged to have attempted to kill the MCA after mixing her prescribed syrup medication with an unknown substance.
The second accused, Mbula, is the victim’s household.
“The recovered suspected poison substances have been forwarded to the government chemist in Nairobi for analysis and the results have not been received,” reads a section of the police affidavit by Corporal Samson Ogembo.
Appearing before Chief magistrate Cosmas Maundu, the prosecution also sought time to obtain phone records in order to establish whether the first suspect, Katana was at the scene of the incident.
Detectives are also pursuing other leads indicating that another suspects could have been involved. The prosecution described Katana as a flight risk.
The victim was admitted in hospital and is in stable condition.
Katana meanwhile denied the accusations saying that he was being targeted because of his political affiliations while reiterating his stance that he does not know the second suspect (Mbula).
The suspects will be detained at the Madogo police station. The case will be mentioned on February 2,2022.
