KISII, Kenya, Feb 10- A former US military officer, who is also a Kenyan citizen, Charles Matoke is eyeing the Kisii gubernatorial seat in the forthcoming elections.

On Thursday, Matoke received blessings from the Abagusii Council of elders, ahead of the August 9, polls, in a major boost to his bid.

He joins a crowded race of ten other aspirants seeking to succeed outgoing governor James Ongwae, who has served two terms. He is hoping to wade through the politics of clans in the populous County, which plays a major factor in who is elected.

The 36-year-old told Shahidi News he is equal to the task, despite facing much older competitors.

The elder’s installation ceremony was held in Itibo village of the County.

“I have come to ask my people to give me the mantle to lead them. I am ready to be your leader and serve you,” Matoke said.

He said that he had consulted the elders, who in return allowed him to pursue his dream.

Others in the gubernatorial race include Manson Oyongo, Chris Obure, Simba Arati, Alfred Nyangweso, Prof Sam Ongeri, Rachael Otundo, Charles Matoke, Joash Maangi, Janet Ong’era, Patrick Lumumba among others.

Arati is currently the Dagorreti North Member of Parliament while Maangi has been serving as the Kisii Deputy Governor.
