NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 10- The Interior Ministry has requested an additional Sh9 billion for election preparedness, recruitment of additional 5000 officers in April this year, and its general operations.
In the first supplementary estimates for the current financial year, 2021/2022, the Interior Ministry has requested a total of Sh9.06 billion, of which Sh5.75 billion will go to the National Police Service, Sh5.2 billion for recruitment of additional officers, and Sh278 million to the Ministry headquarters and the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO).
The Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Karanja Kibicho on Tuesday appeared before the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Administration and National Security where he also said President Uhuru Kenyatta was expected to officially launch the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Forensic laboratory and that an additional Sh2 billion was required to equip it before the launch.
The police Forensic Laboratory whose construction began two decades ago will be launched this month and is expected to fastrack investigations of serious crimes like terrorism, murder, robbery with violence, cybercrime and rape among others.
For the police Group Life Cover, the ministry requested Sh5.8 billion and another Sh574 million for the pending bills on the cover.
Dr. Kibicho also said there were ongoing multi-agency operations in Lamu, Kerio Belt, Laikipia, Baringo, and other areas that needed an additional Sh500 million.
The PS warned that being an election year, there would be a lot of pressure on the police to maintain law and order, especially in those areas.
