SIAYA,Kenya, Feb, 12 – During a tour of Siaya county where he visited the ongoing construction of classrooms that will host leaners under the competency based curriculum (CBC) Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha dispelled fears that contractors who have completed their works will not receive their payments on time.

Magoha said that plans are already underway to ensure those who have completed their works are paid forthwith.

Already more than 1,000 classrooms have been constructed nationwide in readiness to receive the next cohort of learners under CBC in 2023.

“The government has set aside 3.2 billion shillings to pay contractors putting up the competency based curriculum infrastructure projects countrywide. We urge them to submit all the necessary documents on time to the relevant offices to enable processing of the same on time,” said Magoha.

The education minister meanwhile urged official from the ministry of public works  to ensure the relevant documents are forwarded to the ministry of education within the next three days in order to avoid delays.

Meanwhile public officials and school committees have been directed not create barriers for payment of the contractors who successfully complete their projects.

Close to Sh10 billion has been set aside for the construction of classrooms which will be done in two phases.

This is expected to fund the construction of 6,500 classrooms in 6,371 secondary schools across the country.

The move is expected to address the classroom deficit in public secondary schools in turn facilitating a smooth transition of CBC grade 6 learners to junior secondary in January 2023.

President Uhuru Kenyatta had directed the National Treasury to vail Sh8 billion towards the construction of 10,000 classrooms in secondary school.

It is being implemented under the Kenya economic stimulus package, using local contractors within the vicinity of the secondary school to tap local skills and enhance economic opportunities.
