MOMBASA,Kenya, Feb, 15 – Nancy Gachewa, the director of Gremon Education Centre in Bamburi,Mombasa county will remain in police custody  after a Mombasa court refused to grant her bail after she was accused of causing grievous harm to a 13-year-old pupil at the institution.

Appearing before Shanzu resident magistrate David Odhiambo on Monday, Gachewa is said to have alongside others meted violence on the student for allegedly stealing chapatis.

Odhimabo said that the could would consider her bail application following the hearing and determination of her assault case on Caleb Mwangi Ngure, a standard six pupil at the school.

She will be detained at the Shimo La Tewa G.K prison.

In her application, Gachewa had sought to be released on bond, citing poor health and old age – An application that was later dismissed with the court ruling that she would receive the treatment required in prison.

Nancy Gachewa pleaded not guilty to the charges while  21 year Idd Said, a form four student at the institution, pleaded guilty to the charges.

According to preliminary reports, Mwangi was whipped several times with a water pipe as hot water was poured on his body.

During the assault, the minor is said to have sustained burns on his body as well as damaging his kidney.

“My son can barely stand, he has to be assisted. If you look at his back its like he was burnt,” said the victim’s mother, Agnes Mwangi.

“He had multiple wounds, he had infected wounds, he had sepspsis with acute kidney injuries. We attempted to put a catheter but it was initially difficult until the urologists came,” said hospital officials.

The victim is said to have been assaulted on January 23,2022 for allegedly ‘picking extra chapatis’ as opposed to one entitled to learners.

The victim is still receiving treatment in hospital as the medical report is yet to be tabled in court subject to amendments of the charge sheet.

The matter will be mentioned on February 18,2022 pending further directions.
