NAKURU,Kenya, Feb, 20 – Garissa, Isiolo, Lamu, Marsabit, Tana River and Turkana are among counties that will benefit from a water project to address the glaring water shortage amidst a national drought.
According to the project funded by the Dannish government each county will receive an estimated Sh150 million.
The five year project will see over 2,500 households benefit.
The deal was inked between the Dannish government and the water Sector trust fund.
The project is expected to commence in July 2022.
“We are targeting six counties where 2,500 households will benefit from the water programme for use in their household, for the livestock and sanitation,” said Elizabeth Matioli the team leader from DANIDA.
Denmark has previously funded a similar project to the tune of Sh3.5 billion however this time round it has been scaled down to Sh1.2 billion.
The funds will also seek to address the glaring sanitation concerns in the six counties.
Meanwhile the government has also been undertaking a similar project across the country. 685 water projects are currently ongoing including three-peace-dams in Turkana, West Pokot and Marsabit.
“Water is very critical in addressing the issues of conflict and this project will address the perennial cross-border conflicts in the ASAL counties,” said CAS for Water Dr Andrew Tuimur.
