NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 26- President Uhuru Kenyatta has hit at his Deputy William Ruto for having what he terms as an uncontrollable “ambition” to succeed him.
The President was speaking during the Jubilee National Delegates Conference (NDC) held at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) grounds.
He said uncontrolled ambition is like “having an unguided missile that can land and cause destruction…your personal ambition shall not supersede the interests of 50 million Kenyans.”
“Ambitions must be controlled; it cannot be unbridled.”
The President said his Deputy was not patient enough to wait for his term to end.
The two have since parted ways. The President will be supporting Odinga in his bid to become Kenya’s fifth President.
“When you have somebody and people within you, whom you have shared and volunteered to work together and then you abscond your responsibilities and on the other side, you have this other person you reached out for peace and never asked for anything, who is a better brother?” he asked.
He said after the 2018 handshake with the former Prime Minister, he said the government remained as it was, saying “no positions were given to either Odinga or Kalonzo.”
Wiper Leader Raila Odinga Kalonzo Musyoka also attended the NDC.
The ODM leader Raila Odinga said the ‘handshake’ helped to diffuse the political tension that had threatened to tear Kenya apart following the disputed presidential results of 2017 general election.
“You know the country was going down the drain and you heard us calling for a boycott of some particular products,” The ODM leader said while giving a blow-by-blow account of the events leading up to the ‘handshake’.
The Wiper Party Leader said the One Kenya Alliance (OKA) had resolved to join hands with Odinga and President Kenyatta in ‘Azimio La Umoja’ political formation saying discussions were underway to settle on a single presidential candidate for the August polls.
“We are committed to ensuring one nation and one people. We have begun structured talks to build a strong nation. This is not the time for name-calling, it is a time to build a proud nation among the community of nations,” Musyoka said.
During the NDC, Jubilee Party members endorsed several changes in the party’s structure including new leaders and party symbols.
In the changes, founding Jubilee Party Secretary-General Raphael Tuju stepped down from the position and was replaced by Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni.
