MANDERA, Kenya, Mar 1- Police in Mandera have launched a manhunt for suspected Alshabaab militants who killed a chief along the notorious Mandera-Fino-Lafey road.

Mohamed Abdi Ahmed was shot dead Monday afternoon as he rode on a government motorcycle towards Mandera town.

“He left Omar Jillo at about 1 pm and after about an hour we received reports that our brother had been shot dead while heading to Mandera town,” a relative who spoke on anonymity told Shahidi.

The Omar Jillo location chief was killed by two armed men according to an eyewitness.

Ahmed was hired by the government in July last year to replace the area chief who had been killed by suspected Alshabaab militants in his home at Omar Jillo.

Meanwhile, security officers at Elele Quick Response Unit (QRU) repulsed suspected Alshabaab militants who attempted to attack their camp Monday night.

According to a report filed at Wargadud Police Station in Mandera South, the armed militants used fierce assorted rifle fire on the camp.

The security camp was probed by people suspected to be Al Shabaab militants from the southern part of the camp. The attackers used fierce assorted rifle fire but officers managed to counter and repulsed the attacker who later withdrew,” reads the report.

According to the report, the incident took about twenty minutes.

The incident came barely ten days after intelligence reports had been shared over a possible attack on the camp.

The report shared on February 2, warned that the militants were targeting the Elele QRU camp.
