NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 2- A senior Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer is expected in Makueni court to face charges of abuse of office and corruption.

The Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) of the National Police Service (NPS) arrested and detained superintendent Robert Samoei, based at Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) headquarters officer at Capitol Hill Police Station and released him on bail ahead of his arraignment.

This is after the Director of Public Prosecutions approved criminal charges against him for abuse of office, corruption and further ordered that he be arrested and charged immediately.

An investigation into Samoei by the IAU was prompted after traders in Emali and Salama complained against him for extortion, harassment and abuse of authority in the year 2021.

The DCIO was at the time working as a DCIO in Mukaa Sub County of Makueni before he was redeployed to DCI Mazingira House.

investigations revealed that he had registered different Mpesa mobile numbers with a National ID card belonging to his girlfriend and which he used to demand and receive bribery from the public.

It was further revealed that the said girlfriend was unaware that her ID number was being used by the officer to register a Safaricom line, up until she was called upon to assist with investigations.

Samoei was released on a cash bail of Sh10,000 and is set to take a plea before Makueni Law courts.

The arrest of the DCIO comes barely a week after the IAU arrested and charged a Police Constable, Evans Kemboi, with the offences of assault and malicious damage to property.

Kemboi who was attached to the Spring Valley Police Station was arraigned before the Milimani Law courts.
